Cyber Strategies to Combat Cyberwar Attacks on the Power Grid

Updated: Jan 3

As geopolitical tensions continue to intensify, the power grid is under more serious risk of cyberwar attacks than ever before. The recent pager attacks are a clear indication of what’s on the horizon, but what is less clear is how utilities must gear up their defences in order to get ahead of the attackers at this pivotal moment in history!

That is why at SGT25 we will be addressing OT cybersecurity opportunities and challenges for the power grid in great depth and on multiple levels.

✅ The strategic plenary sessions on day one provide senior management perspectives on the emerging threat landscape, the most leading edge cyber innovations being leveraged, and how new policies and procedures must re-shape the utility cyber organisation and posture in the year ahead.

✅ The technical case-study programme showcases a series of cyber innovation projects with a focus on the successes and setbacks experienced to date, as well as the future roadmaps and partnerships that will strengthen end-to-end OT and IT cybersecurity across all gird domains.

✅ The platinum sponsor presentation from Fortinet reveals the lessons learnt from the implementation of a comprehensive range of cybersecurity solutions and innovations across 500+ utilities worldwide.

Just some of the issues that will be addressed in the cybersecurity segments of the conference include:

  • Nation State – quantifying the risk and developing a comprehensive framework to defend, detect, recover and respond to sophisticated nation state attacks

  • Insider Threat – devising clear policies and procedures to guard against a range of insider threats including malicious, negligent, departing, third-party, compromised and insider agents

  • Supply Chain – leveraging blockchain technology to drive transparency, decentralization, and process automation in supplier management and guard against supply chain attacks

  • AI Attacks – combatting large-scale automated attacks through AI-powered real-time threat detection

  • Cloud Security - enhance the security of cloud services effective configuration, ongoing security management and regulatory compliance to protect sensitive infrastructure

  • Renewables – applying a defence in depth strategy to guard against the extended attack surface introduced by renewables integration

  • Network Codes – driving compliance with the cybersecurity components of the European Network Codes in combination with other regulatory priorities at regional and national levels

  • NIS2 – prioritising the aspects of NIS2 that will deliver the greatest return on cybersecurity investment in the context of new threats and new vulnerabilities

  • IEC 62443 – overcoming the challenges of implementing IEC 62443 in the power grid, in terms of investment in technology, expertise, and organizational change to optimise your cybersecurity posture while maintaining operational efficiency

  • Deception Techniques - developing and deploying a cost-effective cyber deception solution to support advanced threat detection and intelligence gathering and effectively misdirect and thwart cyber attacks

  • Data Diodes – overcoming the cost and complexity of implementing diodes for mission critical applications to guard against advanced persistent threats (APT)

  • Zero-Trust - underpinning zero-trust security measure with robust monitoring regime to guard again insider threat, supply chain risks, and remote access management

  • Nextgen Firewalls – leveraging the powerful capabilities of nextgen firewalls to enhance power grid cybersecurity and provide advanced threat protection and granular control

  • Quantum Safe Encryption – future-proofing power grid systems against evolving cyber threats, through the early adoptions of advanced cybersecurity measures to maintain the integrity and reliability of the grid over the long term

That’s not all! The intensively peer-to-peer environment and the high levels of onsite security and privacy we create at SGT25, means that there will be as much value gained from the 1:1 conversations you strike up during the breaks as you gain from the formal presentations and interactive Q&A sessions.
