AMI Blockchain security

Part of the benefits provided by Smart Grid is the deployment of Advanced Metering Infrastructure or AMI. This asset allows for a two-way communication channel between consumers and energy providers. The circulating data serves two purposes: consumption billing and facilitating the decision-making process.

The prospect of security breaches is real, and engineers actively look for solutions. The fact is that AMI assets are considerably scattered and exposed to both internal and external manipulation after deployment. A recent publication in the Sustainable Energy, Grids and Networks journal proposes adopting blockchain technology to secure #AMI. The proposed #blockchain application encompasses P2P network transmission application, consensus algorithms and smart contracts.

The architecture created by the researchers provides authentication encryption and data unification to avoid single-point failures. In practice, the structure is built on the following five layers:

1️⃣ Data collection: Represented by the physical smart meter in the user’s premises, the goal is to collect consumption data.
2️⃣ Network transmission: Collected data is processed through the transmission and verification protocols. Applications include an SHA-512 secure algorithm.
3️⃣ Consensus: A consensus algorithm organises the block content and addresses trust problems.
4️⃣ Contract: The foundation for flexible programming and data operation through smart contracts previously defined by engineers.
5️⃣ Application: Power suppliers get access to real-time data about consumers’ behaviour. It allows them to monitor and control for any irregularity.
