Keep up to date with the latest developments on the Advanced Metering Infrastructure 2021 virtual conference, run by Smart Grid Forums.
Case Study: Elektro Celje
This week we caught up with Leon Maruša, Data Scientist & AMI Engineer at Elektro Celje in Slovenia. Leon will be speaking at the conference on the subject of ‘Forecasting’ and how Elektro Celje are improving the quality and reliability of their smart meter data to provide more accurate consumption models and facilitate demand side management.
Leon explained: “High penetration of RES, BESS and EVs in the distribution grid requires new innovative approaches to grid operation and planning that must include new technologies and consider numerous new factors.
As Elektro Celje is approaching 100% smart meter coverage in the low voltage grid we asked ourselves, how can we benefit from this technology? The original purpose of the 1st generation smart meters was remote billing, but as the technology progressed the meters now enable measurement of active and reactive load profiles, voltages and currents per phase as well as events that are detected on the grid. So far, this data hasn’t been used much, but with strong domain knowledge, data analytics approach and the necessity to provide more insight into the grid motivated us to tackle the challenge of leveraging smart meter data in the most effective way.
The journey started with implementation of the most basic use-cases for different departments at our DSO and different EU projects that we’re involved in. Once the capabilities of smart meter data, supported with analytical tools and analyses we have developed have been recognized, the ideas for different use-cases started to merge and we have set the roadmap to analytical implementation.
During the conference we will present different use-cases and implementations that are done or are in progress (operational reporting, consumer profiling, dynamic tariffing, load forecasting, new grid planning applications among others) as well as future implementations that are still planned in the roadmap. I look forward to sharing Elektro Celje’s experiences, challenges, use cases and future roadmap with attendees at Advanced Metering Infrastructure 2021.”
Leon will be one of 12 utility case-studies being presented at Advanced Metering Infrastructure 2021. Alongside the case-study agenda, there will be 3 x supplier presentations, 4 x live Q&A sessions, a 90-min roundtable discussion session, and more, all in just one intensive high-value day!
