Case Study: Iberdrola
This week we caught up with David MacDonald, System Monitoring Lead Engineer at Iberdrola, for a sneak peek into his subject: Industrialising IEC 61850 and using automated SCTs (Substation Configuration Tool) to make the configuration of the substation automation system time and cost-efficient. David’s presentation will take place at 14:00 CET on Wednesday 28th October at the IEC 61850 Global 2020 virtual conference. Here is what he had to share with us:
David explains: “IEC 61850 offers a little known but very valuable opportunity to Utilities who have already completed their standardization homework. Configuration tools can actually be automated and the whole engineering process can be completed in one-click.
The challenge of getting major device manufacturers on board with this concept has already been overcome and the difficult lessons of how to automatically configure goose messages and sampled values have been learnt.
Soon this industrialized design will be applied to renovate all those previously installed SAS devices whose lifespan is coming to an end. Leveraging the IEC 61850 process to automate the engineering process will facilitate the acceleration of this renovation.
I look forward to demonstrating the command line operation of a completely automated SCT tool at the IEC 61850 Global 2020 virtual conference this year.”
David’s will be one of 24 utility case-studies being presented at IEC 61850 Global 2020. Alongside the case-study agenda, there will be 8 x supplier presentations, 8 x live Q&A sessions, a 90-min roundtable discussion session, and more, all in just two intensive high-value days!
