N-SIDE will join us at Smart Grid Big Data 2019 as a Silver Sponsor

Please join us in welcoming N-SIDE as Silver Sponsors to Smart Grid Big Data 2019, taking place in less than 4 weeks on 17-19 September in Berlin. The N-SIDE team will be available across all three days of the event, hosting a roundtable discussion, and giving a case-study presentation during the AI & ML day.

In the conference room:

N-SIDE will be joined by Elia on conference day three, to present a case-study on how Machine Learning is being applied for Smart Dynamic Pricing at Elia.

10:20, Thursday 19th September:
Smart Dynamic Pricing – accessing flexibility from end-consumers through ML for different needs (e.g. balancing, congestion management, auto-consumption)

  • Developing AI/ML use cases in a structural way at an innovative TSO (ELIA)
  • Getting flexibility implicitly by exposing the end-consumer to dynamic price signals
  • Applying ML for generating the best price signals in order to achieve a desired objective
  • Overcoming important challenges – reaction to price signals also depends on:
    • Internal factors such as user preferences and behaviours, events
    • External factors such as temperature, weather, time of day, season
  • Understanding how a dynamic pricing engine can be used in a diverse range of use-cases such as system imbalance, congestion management, and BRP portfolio balancing

Guillaume Leclercq, Head of AI for Energy – N-SIDE:

Guillaume Leclercq (Msc Mathematical Engineering, UCLouvain 2007) holds a PhD. in Mathematical Engineering from UCLouvain. He is now leading the AI for Energy consulting team at N-SIDE, which develops use cases, proof of concepts, and industrialization projects involving machine learning in the energy domain (e.g. dynamic sizing of reserves, energy market price forecasts, interconnector schedule forecasts, maintenance planning). Previously, Guillaume was a Senior Consultant in the Grid&Market group at N-SIDE, where he has worked on industrial process (steel), energy and research & innovation topics. He was the project manager of multiple projects focusing on the use of advanced analytics in the field of electricity markets, TSO-DSO coordination, flexibility services for system operators.

Johan Maricq, Innovation Project Leader – Elia

Johan Maricq (Msc Electrical Engineering, UCLouvain 2007) is a creative person with more than 12 years of professional experience in the power sector. He is currently part of the Innovation team of the Elia group, focusing on digital aspects and leading a data science laboratory. Before taking this role, Johan had various positions within the group as Asset Management expert, International consultant and Business analyst, respectively in charge of ICT, new technologies integration and data aspects, risk management and various processes. Those positions enabled him to get a clear understanding of the energy landscape and build up a strong technical knowledge.

GIS Analytics Case Study from Caruna

Combining multiple data steams including structured and unstructured, internal and external, historic and real-time data, is enabling smart grid big data teams to generate deeper grid performance insights than ever before. However, with multiple streams of data come multiple levels of data quality challenges, and one such source of high-value low-quality data, is geospatial data.

At Smart Grid Big Data 2019, we are delighted to welcome Lauri Lähteenmäki, Manager, Data and Analytics at Caruna to the speaker line-up. Lauri will be addressing the complex issue of GIS based analytics and will be sharing how his big data team have been harnessing GIS based insights, technology transformation and advanced analytics programmes to broaden their view on the pressures facing their grid performance. We caught up with Lauri this week, and he provided us with a sneak preview of his presentation.

“Following major storms leading to extensive and long-lasting outages in 2010 and 2011 strict security of supply requirements were introduced in the Finnish Electricity Market act. Consequently, Caruna has implemented an extensive, accelerated investment programme in which network data plays a significant role.

During the investment ramp up process, the whole asset management process was re-thought from material harmonization, sourcing and project management to IT systems. Implementation of a new Network Information System enabled Caruna to utilise and analyse various data sources it already had in conjunction with several 3rd party and open data sources to achieve maximum customer impact and optimal balance of investment and maintenance actions with the first part of the 15-year reliability investment program. During and after the successful ramp up phase Caruna continued to develop its analytics and has recently experimented with machine learning, for instance in forecasting new network commissioning schedules more accurately.

I look forward to sharing our experiences and achievements in harnessing network data and spatial information to drive a significant change in the way we share positive energy.”

Lauri leads a team of enthusiastic analytics professionals in the Development and Innovation Unit of Caruna, the largest DSO in Finland. Currently he is focused on developing Caruna’s data analytics competences and toolkits by transitioning to the cloud to fully take advantage of the unique data and to enrich the customer experience.

Lauri’s will be one of 20+ utility case-studies scheduled to take place at Smart Grid Big Data 2019. Alongside the case-study conference programme we have a dedicated AI & ML post-conference seminar, a number of technology innovation panel discussions, a series of end-user driven roundtable discussions, a live demo lab of the latest tools and technologies, and an evening networking reception open to all participants.
